Pegasus Bay winery is one of the top wineries in Canterbury. The Donaldson family have been seriously involved in winemaking since the 1970s and were pioneers of grape growing and winemaking.
Proudly family owned; their eldest son Matthew is the winemaker, his wife Di assists with winery logistics and systems. Ed is the Marketing Manager, his wife Belinda looks after the winery's restaurant, now a function/event venue. Michael is the Local Sales Manager, and the youngest son Paul is the winery's Manager.
Pegasus Bay vineyard is largely un-grafted, producing low-yields, quality fruit. Sustainable winemaking with minimal handling of fruit during processing and gentle pressing. They allow wines to go through natural malolactic fermentation and clarification by settling, without the use of fining agents. All Pegasus Bay wines are made with estate-grown fruit from their home vineyard.

The nose is rich and welcoming with fragrances of black plums, blackberries, melded with violet florals, along with meaty, savoury notes, oak spices and a metallic mineral underlay. Medium-full bodied, the palate is gently full with flavours of blackberries, black plums, subtle violet fragrant, along with fresh oak spices. The acidity is vibrant and balanced with the richness of fruit and body; which carries a savouriness and supported by soft, natural high tannin, through to a smooth, lengthy finish. The nose is gently full with complexity, a concentrated core of blackberries, plums and cassis entwined with tar, rocky mineral; unfolding subtle fragrances of dark floral, aged soy, earth, cedar and oak spices. Full-bodied, the palate is plush with richness and concentrated flavours of an amalgam of blackberries, plums and cassis, shimmer with tar, rocky mineral and savoury notes; unveiling umami, cedar and elegant oak spices element. The flavours are rich and concentrated with depth, interweaved with silky and firm structured fine-grained tannin extraction, supported by balanced acidity, carries the wine to a lengthy, sustained and satisfying finish. This is a brilliant NZ South island Bordeaux blend with richness and concentration that rivals top Bordeaux with its own identity and vibrancy, offers superb value. Pegasus Bay Reserve Prima Donna Pinot Noir 2016, WaiparaPinot Noir from New Zealand - Canterbury & WaiparaReview Date : 03-Jul-2020Dark, medium ruby-red with a black hue, slightly lighter on edge. The nose is gently powerful with lightly cooked red plums and cherries, dark herbs, entwined with earth and gamey development, along with savoury element, and warm oak spices. Medium-bodied, the palate is full of energy with flavours of lightly cooked red plums and cherries, dark herbs; unfolding earthy mushroom, sweet liquorice roots. Along with gamey, earth element; accompanied by savoury and warming oak spices linger to a long and sustained finish. The flavours are with depth and concentration. The fruit nuances of red plums and cherries, lightly cook, still has its crunch with a softened edge. The acid is full of energy but un-intrusive, showing the wine with support and length, along with the alcohol power. The tannin is powdery and fine-grained, providing soft grip with structure, contributed the age-worthiness of this wine, carries some warm oak spices with an elegant presence. Flavours are integrated with harmony, complex and powerful yet gentle and elegant in presence with its development. A Prima Donna that's worthy of your attention.
