Pegasus Bay 2015 Sauvignon Semillon, Chardonnay and Riesling

17-Mar-2017
The white varieties of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling are the classics of the Waipara Valley region of North Canterbury. They are also the premier white varieties of the pioneering Pegasus Bay winery, founded by the Donaldson family. Based on their extensive knowledge of the wines of the world, they immediately made their wines in distinctive styles that would carry them well into the future, the three varieties making very different, but complementary styles for success in the market. The Sauvignon Blanc is blended with Semillon and made in the Graves, Bordeaux style, rather than that of the Loire; the Chardonnay made with sophisticated inputs to give complexity as in top white burgundy, and the Riesling late-picked with some enrichening sweetness. Winemaker Mat Donaldson has subtly developed and fine-tuned the wine styles over the years, and they are as exciting and contemporary as can be. Here, I review the new releases of these wines from the excellent quality, but low yielding vintage. www.pegasusbay.com
