In establishing Pegasus Bay in the Waipara Valley, Ivan and Chris Donaldson had the experience of being part of a group with an experimental vineyard in Halswell, which gave them indications on which varieties would be successful to plant. A broad range of varieties was put into the ground, and they are all generally regarded as proven performers to this day. The Burgundy varieties of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir flourish in today’s supportive market, but the equally good Bordeaux grapes of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot have lost a bit of lustre. It’s a shame, as winemaker Mat Donaldson crafts very good examples from these varieties. It’s just that the consumer has moved away from the Bordeaux styles – until they taste the Pegasus Bay wines. Then they become born-again fans. Here, I review the new release 2014 Sauvignon/Semillon and 2013 Merlot/Cabernet blends, plus the ever-popular ‘Encore’ Noble Riesling, from the 2014 vintage. www.pegasusbay.com
