Pegasus Bay 2014 Bel Canto and 2013 Riesling, and 2012 Merlot /Cabernet

05-Jun-2015
The Donaldson family determined from an early stage which varieties would perform well in the Waipara Valley by trial and error in the experimental vineyard they were involved with. With some minor adjustments, the mix has remained relatively constant since then. Of course fads and fashions have an impact, and Riesling and Pinot Noir are now generally seen as the most exciting, interesting and successful varieties in the district. At the time of establishing Pegasus Bay, the Bordeaux varieties were the most desirable of the reds. Here, I review the reserve style dry 2014 ‘Bel Canto’ Riesling and new release 2013 Riesling, both considered to be among the best in the Waipara Valley, and the 2012 Merlot/Cabernet, a reminder of different consumer preferences. All the wines are successful and proven bottlings. www.pegasusbay.com
