Pask Gimblett Gravels, Small Batch and Declaration Releases

13-Dec-2016
The Pask Winery commands considerable respect, not only for being the pioneering grower and producer in the Gimblett Gravels in Hawke’s Bay, but also as a maker of classical Hawke’s Bay wine expressions. Director and winemaker Kate Radburnd is unashamedly a classicist, making wines in styles that are enthusiastically received around the world. This is not to say that Kate and the Pask team are averse to innovation, but they are careful not to institute it without due consideration. Pask have their ‘Gimblett Gravels’ wines which are benchmark Hawke’s Bay styles. Recently they introduced the ‘Small Batch’ tier to show their work in trialling new techniques and styles, as well as small parcels of distinctive fruit. The ‘Declaration’ range is the company’s flagship, and these wines can be counted among the top tier in Hawke’s Bay. Pask has a fine reputation for their wines since the inaugural 1985 vintage. Recently Pask announced that the company and assets were for sale. It will be interesting to see what this brings. Any buyer will be acquiring proven vineyards and a highly functional winery, along with a brand with an enviable track record. Here, I review a selection of new release Pask ‘Gimblett Gravels’, ‘Small Batch’ and ‘Declaration’ wines. www.pask.co.nz
