Palliser Estate ‘The Great Hector’ Pinot Noir 2013

Palliser Estate in Martinborough has as their flagships, Pinot Noirs under the ‘Great Dogs’ range which credits the importance of dogs as companions to many in the wine industry. There have been six such wines so far, and ‘The Great Hector’ 2013 is the seventh and latest release. The wines I’ve seen show a variation in style expression sensitive to what each vintage has yielded in fruit characteristics, but have definite and positive inputs, the oak matching the fruit depth. The previous bottling, ‘The Great Paloma’ 2011 (click here to see my review) was very elegant, reflecting Palliser Estate’s path towards greater refinement. With the ‘Great Dogs’, winemaker Allan Johnson seeks to make a wine "showing a sense of place with oak a supporting component”. Here, I review ‘The Great Hector’ 2013. It is one of the richest, most bold and finest Palliser Estate Pinot Noir I have tasted to date.
