Palliser Estate Martinborough Sauvignon Blanc 2014

13-Feb-2015
Holding the crown as Martinborough and the Wairarapa’s leading Sauvignon Blanc producer, Palliser Estate has consistently crafted a long run of examples that can stand alongside the best from Marlborough. The wines possess a greater fruit richness and depth than most others in the region, and show a strong personality, usually in the riper spectrum of passionfruit and tropical fruits, expressing thiol character. Winemaker Allan Johnson and his team have resisted the temptation to incorporate significant winemaker inputs from lees and oak to ensure the focus of the refreshing fruitiness that the variety is best known for. But I’ve sensed a pleasing direction towards greater finesse over recent years. Here, I review the new release 2014, an excellent vintage for the region. Allan Johnson sees the wine as still being very youthful, and advises that it will continue to develop with some bottle age. www.palliser.co.nz
