Paddy Borthwick 2015 Waiprarapa Riesling, Pinot Gris and ’Falloon’ Pinot Noir

24-Jun-2016
With over 35 vintages under his belt, Paddy Borthwick is one of the Wairarapa’s most experienced winemakers. His 27 ha Gladstone vineyard, established in 1996 is integrated with the Borthwick family farming interests. The vineyard, under the care of Lisa Hodson, assisted by Anne Behrent and Mark Ellison consistently yields quality fruit which results in a strong range of wines which are primarily exported, but they also have a good presence on the domestic market. Here, I review the new 2015 Riesling and Pinot Gris, these varietals always performing well for Paddy. I also review the ‘Falloon Block’ Pinot Noir 2015, a single vineyard wine made from the vineyard established over 20 years ago by John and Philippa Falloon at Bideford, deep in the Wairarapa. I tasted the 2014 vintage of this wine, noting its strong textural nature and complex savoury flavours. The 2015 has been made with a greater emphasis on fruit expression, and the wine is one of a growing number of exciting Pinot Noir bottlings that Paddy has been releasing. www.borthwick.co.nz
