Pa Road 2016 Sauvignon, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Rosé, and 2014 Pinot Noir

Haysley MacDonald and his family have been on the land for 800 years and are intimately associated with the Wairau Bar in Marlborough. Yet it was only in 2003 the MacDonalds planted vines for contract supply. With the 2011 vintage they released their own wines under the ‘te Pa’ brand. The brand has grown very quickly and the quality and the quantity are remarkable. The te Pa operation must be regarded as a very significant player in the Marlborough and New Zealand industry. The MacDonalds have 160 ha on the Wairau Bar, 40 ha nearby on Thomas Road, a site with 20 ha on Alabama Road and 100 ha in another vineyard in the Awatere. Contract fruit supplements the estate vineyards. The vineyards come under the care of Ra Hebberd, working with Haysley. Liam McElhinney and Sam Bennett are the winemakers.

The ‘te Pa’ brand is supported by the ‘Koha’ label, and now the ‘Pa Road’ brand has been released. These wines are crafted to be more accessible price-wise and aimed at the FMCG and larger chain liquor companies. Already the wines have shown well, the 2014 Pinot Noir awarded ‘Wine of the Show’ at the 2016 Marlborough Wine Show. They offer very good value. I review the new Pa Road wines here.
