Osawa Wines Hawke’s Bay – 2011 Releases

A relatively new arrival on the Hawke's Bay wine scene, Osawa Wines has made a strong impact on the show circuit with a number of the wines winning gold medals and trophies. Osawa Wines is the vision of Japanese businessman and wine lover Taizo Osawa, who, enamoured by New Zealand's rural beauty, established his vineyard in the Maraekakaho district of Hawke's Bay in 2005, purchasing bare land from Craggy Range. With the advice of David Jordan and Gus Lawson, 35 ha of the 43 ha property were planted, the first vintage being in 2008. 35% of the site is planted to Pinot Noir, 25% Sauvignon Blanc, 10% Pinot Gris, 10% Chardonnay, 10% Gewurztraminer, 3% Sangiovese, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Merlot. Viticulture is under Brent Stone, formerly with Crossroads. Different tiers are produced: ‘Winemaker's Collection', ‘Prestige Collection', ‘Flying Sheep' and ‘Flying Mouton' referring to cumulus clouds likened to ‘flying sheep', and ‘Sustainable Dots'. Approx. 70% of the wine is exported to Japan. The highly experienced Rod McDonald is the contracted winemaker. www.osawawines.co.nz
