One Off Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2014
The Rod McDonald ‘One Off’ range of wines encompasses limited quantities of unique bottlings that fall outside the main styles produced under the Rod McDonald umbrella. It allows for the capture of small parcels of fruit from sites that become available only once, and the label enables Rod a degree of freedom in winemaking expression that explores innovation without conforming to convention or what the market dictates.
Today’s winemakers, wine judges, sommeliers and writers are generally proponents of the more elegant, food-friendly, minerally style of Chardonnay. However, as most retailers will report, there are still many consumers who hanker for the big, golden, buttery, toasty Chardonnays that make a statement. Rod points out he’s into the new wave style, but also appreciates the more traditional, old-fashioned wines. The One Off Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2014 is a nod to the "big, bold and buttery” Chardonnays of yesteryear, but without going ‘over the top’. It should develop greater richness and boldness with bottle-age. www.rmwines.co.nz

One Off Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2014Chardonnay from New Zealand - Hawke's BayReview Date : 30-Mar-2015Bright, light straw-yellow colour with lemon-green hues, lighter on edge. The nose is full with aromas of youthfully fresh yellow stonefruits, citrus fruits and nutty, toasty oak, along with smoky elements. The fruit has excellent clarity and focus. Medium-full bodied, up-front flavours of ripe citrus and yellow stonefruits are the feature on palate. The fruit is bold, but stylish and presented with clarity and freshness. The fruit is intermixed with positive nutty and toasty oak, with subtle creamy, lemon-curd MLF elements. This has concentration, weight and presence, and the fruit is underlined by fine, phenolic textures. The mouthfeel features fresh, lively acidity and plenty of energy and power that carries the wine to a full, open and harmonious finish. This is a full, up-front Chardonnay with youthful fruit clarity and plenty of barrel and MLF inputs that will bloom over the next 3-4 years. Serve with seafood, poultry and pork. Clone 15 and 95 fruit from Maraekakaho and Bridge Pa showing high malic acid content, high solids barrel-fermented with indigenous yeasts to 13.3% alc., the wine aged 10 months in oak, undergoing batonnage and MLF by natural and inoculated yeasts. 17.5+/20 Mar 2015 RRP $27.99
