OMEO 2014 ‘Blackmans’ Riesling and 2013 ‘Five Barriques’ Pinot Noir


I visited Bruce Shaw and Robyn Sim’s tiny, but immaculate 1 ha Omeo vineyard on Hawley Road in the Earnscleugh Valley foothills last Labour Weekend during the Alexandra Valley New Release Tasting. Omeo is the name for the local area, gully and creek. Bruce established the vineyard in 1998, planting to 10% Riesling and 90% Pinot Noir, the latter to clones 5, 10/5, 6, 777 and 114, which are ungrafted. Both Bruce and Robin are fully involved in the industry, Robin a viticulturist and Bruce assisting Antony Worch at the Alexandra Vintners winemaking facility since 2012. The Omeo wines have been made from the 2009 vintage, the fruit being sold prior. The production is very limited, with approx. 45 cases of Riesling and 200 cases of Pinot Noir made yearly. More Riesling is being planted due to the demand. Here, I review the new 2014 ‘Blackmans Gully’ Riesling and 2013 ‘Five Barriques’ Pinot Noir.
