Omaka Springs Marlborough 2016 Pinot Gris and 2013 Merlot

16-Mar-2017
Geoff and Robina Jensen established Omaka Springs Estate in 1992 when they moved their olive trees from Nelson to replant them next to vineyards in the Omaka Valley, Marlborough. With over 60 ha of vines planted in two sites, the home ‘Kennedys Road’ vineyard and the ‘Falvey’s Road’ site, they grow Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Merlot, Pinot Gris and Gruner Veltliner in the former, and Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Syrah in the latter. The’Falvey’s’ vineyard is also the Estates root stocks nursery. Ian Marchant has been the winemaker since 1998, and the vineyard manager is Richard Shepherd, with the company since 1994. Here, I review the 2016 Pinot Gris, and have a re-look at the 2013 Merlot, which was last reviewed in October 2015, and is now showing savoury secondary characters. www.omaka.co.nz
