Obsidian Waiheke Estate and Reserve Releases

01-Dec-2015
Since Lindsay and Janet Spilman sold their shareholding to Alan and Bev Wiltshire, Obsidian shareholders since 2004, the brand has undergone very little change apart from the normal incremental improvements to labelling the making of finer wine, and the addition of Tom Morton as sales and marketing manager. The hillside vineyard at Onetangi has approx. 9 ha planted to the classic Bordeaux varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec, with newer plantings of Chardonnay, Syrah, Viognier, Montepulciano and Tempranillo. Pinot Gris and more Chardonnay are obtained from neighbouring sites. The tiers are well-defined into ‘Estate’, and ‘Reserve’ which includes ‘The Mayor’ and ‘The Obsidian’. Michael Wood, viticulturist and winemaker since 2005 continues his excellent work, and the label shows the benefits of the recent favourable vintages. Here, I review a selection of the latest wines. www.obsidian.co.nz
