No. 1 Family Estate ‘Cuvee Virginie’ Methode 2009

Daniel Le Brun is arguably the producer of the best sparkling wines in New Zealand. Bringing twelve generations of Champagne growing and making experience with him in the late 1970s, Daniel quickly began making complex artisanal methode traditionnelle wines that were recognised as world class. After selling his original business, Daniel and his wife Adele continue to make superb sparkling wines in Rapaura, Marlborough under the ‘No. 1 Family Estates’ label. Their calling card is the ‘No. 1 Cuvee’, a blanc de blanc, first launched in 1999. However the most complex and sophisticated wines are special cuvees named after family members, each made in a distinctive style. Here I review the 2009 ‘Cuvee Virginie’, the label created to honour daughter Virginie’s 21st birthday. The wine is only made in exceptional vintages and the 2009 is the current release.
