No. 1 Family Estate ‘70 Calibre Cuvee’ Methode

25-Dec-2015
As one of the pioneers of sparkling wine in Marlborough, Daniel Le Brun arguably has the most experience and blending skills of any of the method traditionnelle makers in the region, if not the country. Of course Daniel passes on his knowledge to his family and staff, as in the family tradition, so his assistant Lee Dobson is also very accomplished in the making of sophisticated sparkling wine. Lee blended a surprise Blanc de Noirs wine to celebrate Daniel’s 70 birthday, and 35 years of the pioneering of Marlborough Methode in August this year, from stocks of aged ‘Reserve’ wine which are normally used in blending to lend greater complexity and depth to the newer wines. The wine is also essentially a ‘zero dosage’ wine, deemed to be complete in development and complexity. The label created and named by Daniel’s wife Adele, ’70 Calibre’ "matches the calibre of the man” It also refers to Daniel’s love of hunting. I review the celebratory wine here. www.no1familyestate.co.nz
