Neudorf Moutere Chardonnay 2012 Revisited

While I try to be as consistent as I can in my tasting reviews and conclusions, one must accept that a degree of variability in inevitable. Such is the nature of the human palate, influenced by different psychological and physiological frameworks, and social, environmental and temporal circumstances. I’m certainly not immune to these effects. And this isn’t even taking into consideration the wine and its condition. A wine can develop and change quickly, especially if the wine has recently undergone bottling. Often, there are variations between bottles, not necessarily expressions of a fault. I occasionally have the opportunity to taste a wine on several occasions, and I add my new reviews to the database on my website, the earlier preview retained, but with the latest notes listed at the top. Each of the notes is dated; so this way, a reader can see my tasting history of the wine.

Just under 3 months ago, I reviewed the 2012 vintage release of the Neudorf Moutere Chardonnay, which I rated 5-stars at 18.5+/20, and an outstanding wine. This followed the 2011 vintage which I rated a perfect 20.0/20. So the result for the 2012 was a little unexpected. I discussed this with Judy Finn and winemaker Todd Stevens at Neudorf, as well as John Kavanagh winemaker at the time. They all confirmed that 2012 was another top-flight year for them. The wine style is seen as subtly different, with a little more emphasis on fruit complexity, rather than the sulphide reduction complexities that seduced me! A recent tasting of the more accessible Nelson Chardonnay wine from 2012 revealed a wine that I saw as marginally superior to the 2011 vintage, and this gave me the incentive to reassess the Moutere Chardonnay 2012. In retrospect, I believe I initially under-rated the wine, as it shows much more finesse and detail allied to more positive and sweeter fruit, and importantly, the flavour profile and make-up is quite different to the 2011. Here is my new review. www.neudorf.co.nz
