Natural Wine Co. 2016 Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, and 2015 Wrights Reserve Chardonnay

Establishing their Gisborne wine venture on organic and biodynamic philosophies has not been easy for Geoff and Nicola Wright. From 2000 and small and simple beginnings, sheer hard work by this young couple has seen the fruits of their labour grow into something significant. The Wrights now have two vineyards in the Ormond Valley, including the home ‘Terrace’ site, and one at Manutuke, where their winery and cellar door is situated. Geoff has been keen to experiment with innovative styles, but his output is essentially in two brands: the Natural Wine Co. which can employ organic fruit from vineyards other than their own, and the Wrights label which are their own more sophisticated wines, which are also certified organic. Here, I review two new Natural Wine Co. releases, the 2016 Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, plus the 2015 Wrights ‘Reserve’ Chardonnay.
