Muddy Water Waipara Pinot Noir 2014

03-Jun-2016
Established by Michael and Jane East in 1993, Muddy Water Estate has been owned by the Thomas family since 2011. The same viticultural and winemaking teams that run the neighbouring Greystone Vineyard, led by Nick Gill and Dom Maxwell, relish expressing the differences that the Muddy Water vineyards give. The 12 ha site is flat at the front, but changes to north-facing hillside at the back. The Pinot Noir comes from the limestone-influenced hillside plantings, and the mainstay ‘Estate’ bottling is supported by limited releases of ‘Slowhand’ and ‘Hare’s Breath’ Pinot Noir. Here, I review the 2014 Muddy Water ‘Estate’ Pinot Noir, from a most challenging vintage. With a high proportion of Waipara wines from the 2014 vintage, I have found they benefit with some bottle age, and definitely with time in the glass. The wine was awarded a gold medal at the recent New Zealand Organic Wine Awards. It is due for release in September this year. www.muddywater.co.nz
