Mudbrick Vineyard 2015 Waiheke Island Releases

Mudbrick Vineyard and Restaurant is one of Waiheke Island’s must-visit fixtures. Owners Nick and Robyn Jones established their venture in 1992 and have steadily developed the property and gardens, as well as an excellent restaurant and function venue. However, it is arguably the wines that draw the most critical attention. Mudbrick own two vineyards, the home ‘Mudbrick’ site at Church Bay, and the ‘Shepherds Point’ vineyard at Onetangi, and supplement the fruit with contract grapes from within the Island as well as outside. Recently leasing has further increased the vineyard resourcing again. Patrick Newton has been the winemaker since 2011, and with Nick Otto as vineyard manager, the quality of the wines has continued to rise, and the Mudbrick bottlings can be reckoned to be among Waiheke Island’s leaders. Here, I review the new 2015 ‘Reserve’ white and red releases, including the flagship ‘Velvet’ red. For Mudbrick, the 2015 growing season saw a warm wet spring which allowed strong canopies to develop early in the season, but strong winds and rain at flowering reduced yields by 30%. A warm and dry summer and autumn resulted in physiologically ripe fruit at low brix.
