Mudbrick 2013 Shepherds Point Syrah and 2014 Reserve Viognier and Tempranillo

Established in 1992, Mudbrick is one of Waiheke Island’s most well-known and popular destinations with its excellent and very accessible restaurant, cellar door and garden complex at Oneroa. The wines have always been representative of the very high quality that is consistently obtained on the Island, the fruit coming from the company’s ‘Mudbrick’ and ‘Shepherds Point’ sites, the latter at Onetangi. Addition fruit comes from the ‘Hawkes Crest’ and ‘Browns’ vineyards, giving Mudbrick an annual Waiheke Island wine production of around 2,000 cases annually. This is doubled by wine made from fruit from other regions. Patrick Newton, winemaker since 2011 is lifting the profile of the wines with his thoughtful approach to style, and the quality has been aided by very good vintages of late. Here, I review the 2013 ‘Shepherds Point’ Syrah and 2014 ‘Reserve’ Viognier and Tempranillo.
