Mt Difficulty 2013 Whites, and 2012 and 2011 Pinot Noirs

25-Jul-2014
Mt Difficulty is arguably the most successful Central Otago wine producer with a global reach and broad market penetration. It has access to a full array of vineyards, concentrated around Bannockburn to produce wines that are distinctly faithful in their representation of regionality in all levels and tiers. As well as the classical ‘Bannockburn’ bottlings and superb limited production single vineyard expressions, there are the accessible ‘Roaring Meg’ wines which include fruit from Central Otago beyond the Bannockburn environs. A few years ago, winemaker Matt Dicey introduced the ‘Growers Series’ wines to capture unique and individual expressions of terroir outside the home base of Bannockburn. The range of wines is burgeoning, but extremely fascinating, and shows an intimate feel for what Central Otago is all about. Here, I review a selection of 2013 whites and Pinot Noirs from the 2012 and 2011 vintages, showing the breadth of the Mt Difficulty output. www.mtdifficulty.co.nz
