The 70 ha Mt Beautiful vineyard in Cheviot is well-established now, having been planted in 2004. David and Leigh Teece opened eyes when they chose a new region to plant their vines, rather than the accepted procedure of growing in Marlborough. A North Canterbury vineyard, the situation, geology and climate offers points of difference to the Marlborough wines, and this has been a factor in the success of the wines both internationally and in the domestic market. The vineyard with over half planted to Sauvignon Blanc and approx. 30% to Pinot Noir, supported by Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Riesling is tended by Fin Grieve, and the winemaker is Sam Weaver who has been with Mt Beautiful from the start. He is joined by Ben Weaver as assistant winemaker. Here, I review the new release 2018 Rosé, and 2017 Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir. www.mtbeautiful.co.nz
