Mount Brown, Catherine’s Block and Wild River

27-Aug-2014
Following a decade in horticulture and being involved in the establishment of a vineyard, Tony Rutherford established Mount Brown Estate with his daughter Catherine Keith beginning the winegrowing venture by planting their home block in the Waipara Valley in 2002, to Riesling and Pinot Noir, in a high density of 4,200 vines per hectare. In 2007, following a search for suitable land, they planted their largest vineyard, ‘Limeloader’, with 25 ha dedicated to Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris, with Tempranillo being added in 2010, also at density, with 3,000 vines per ha. In the middle of 2012 they purchased an existing vineyard, their ‘Weka Gravels’ block with old vine Merlot, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. From these sites, they produce wine for three brands, ‘Mount Brown’, the limited release ‘Catherine’s Block, and more accessible ‘Wild River’. Andrew Florance is the vineyard manager and Frank Manifold the winemaker. Here I review a selection of 2013 and 2012 wines, covering all three brands. www.mountbrown.co.nz
