Mount Brown 2016 Waipara and Grand Reserve Sauvignon Blanc

The Mount Brown brand of Tony Rutherford and his daughter Catherine Keith is one of the Waipara Valley labels that is showing positive growth. This is partly due to marketing work, but also the increased quality and consistency of the wines. Mount Brown draws on three vineyards and has the resource of some of the oldest vines in the district providing the base material which is vinified by the very experienced Frank Manifold. The premium Mount Brown ‘estate’ label offers remarkable value, as does the flagship ‘Grand Reserve’ tier, the latter bottlings showing well in wine competitions. The Mount Brown team are making the definition between the two tiers clearer with each vintage, the ‘Grand Reserve’ wines involving more sophisticated winemaking. Here, I review the 2016 Mount Brown ‘estate’ Sauvignon Blanc and ‘Grand Reserve’ Sauvignon Blancs, from a very benign, dry, long growing season.
