Mount Brown 2016 Pinot Noir, and 2016 Wild River and 2015 Mount Brown Tempranillos

Catherine Keith and her father Tony Rutherford operate Mount Brown Estates in the Waipara Valley with three established vineyards and some old vine material. They have the experience Frank Manifold as their winemaker, and together have grown the Mount Brown repute with a range of wines that are showing steady improvement and consistency. Mount Brown performs extremely well with the Waipara Valley classic varieties, and I’ve enjoyed the Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Pinot Noir wines. Catherine and Tony also have Tempranillo planted, yielding a first crop in 2011. Here, I review the first and early bottling of 2016 Mount Brown Pinot Noir with 8 months of oak, the remainder to see 11 months, plus Tempranillo under the more approachable Wild River label from 2016, and under the flagship Mount Brown ‘Grand Reserve’ label from the 2015 vintage.
