Mondillo Central Otago Pinot Noir 2012

16-Aug-2013
One of the most consistent Central Otago Pinot Noirs in terms of quality is the Mondillo, from Domenic and Ally Mondillo’s 12 ha vineyard in the Bendigo sub-region. From the initial 2004 vintage, the wines have been very well received, with a continuous flow of gold medals and trophies being awarded to the various vintages. The wines do show vintage variation, which Domenic describes as being either "masculine or feminine”, but I’ve always found the similarity of fruit expression to be the stronger and more consistent trait. Compared to other Bendigo Pinot Noirs, the Mondillo features sweetness and suppleness which makes it particularly accessible and attractive. The site where the 10 ha of vines are planted must be responsible, as the winemaking has always been Domenic working with Rudi Bauer of Quartz Reef. In July, I spent just over a week in Central Otago and came away impressed with the 2012 Pinot Noirs in general. I never got to try the Mondillo, so am pleased to review it here. www.mondillo.com
