Mondillo 2016 Rosé and 2015 Pinot Noir

07-Sep-2016
With this new release of wines comes news of developments for Domenic and Ally Mondillo. The inaugural 2016 vintage Rosé joins the portfolio of Riesling, Pinot Noir, ‘Bella’ Pinot Noir and ‘Nina’ Late Harvest Riesling. The 2014 vintage of the ‘Nina’ was made at the Aurum facilities rather than at Quartz Reef, where the Mondillo wines have been made from the start. Production shifted from Quartz Reef to Aurum for the 2016 vintage with the taking on of Matt Connell, ex Akarua, as the Mondillo’s winemaker. Matt not only has an enviable track record of making award-winning Central Otago wines, but has a close connection with Domenic when both were involved in the Oregon winemaking scene. Matt uses the Aurum facility, so it was practical to make all the wines at the same facility, with Domenic also having a greater ‘hands-on’ role in their making. It will be interesting to see Matt’s influence on the wines moving forward, though I suspect the special nature and terroir of the Mondillo vineyard site will always prevail. Here, I review the 2016 Rosé and 2015 Pinot Noir. www.mondillo.com
