The Mission Estate premium wines are the black-labelled ‘Reserve’ bottlings. This is where some of the country’s best value quality wines can be found. What is remarkable about these wines is their good value, and in many cases their relatively wide availability, being marketed in most of the traditional retail channels. To produce these bottlings, winemaker Paul Mooney ensures the yields are low and that the fruit selection is decisive. The wines are given particular care in their elevage, and they are crafted to show high quality, provenance and strong character. Here, I review the 2015 Martinborough Pinot Noir, 2016 Gimblett Gravels Syrah, and 2014 Gimblett Gravels Cabernet/Merlot. www.missionestate.co.nz
