Mission 2016 ‘Estate’ Whites. Rosé and Late Harvest

24-Oct-2016
Mission Estate has over 150 years of winemaking history, but is one of the Hawke’s Bay’s most up-to-date and contemporary producers. While the company centres its fruit source around the different districts of Hawke’s Bay, Mission Estate also owns a significant 100 ha vineyard in the Awatere Valley, as well as obtaining fruit from other regions. Paul Mooney, the winemaker has been with Mission for over three decades, but he is ably assisted by Alex Roper. The vineyards are under the care of Steve Wheeler, who joined the company in 2013. The most accessible wines, the ‘Estate’ bottlings are a good marker for what the upper tiers can offer, as they too show proper style, varietal and regional expression and good quality. Here, I review a selection of 2016 whites, a rosé and a late harvest wine. www.missionestate.co.nz
