Mills Reef ‘Reserve’ Gimblett Gravels Syrah 2015

02-Aug-2016
Established in 1989, Mills Reef is rapidly approaching three decade of operating. The Preston Family are based in Tauranga where they have their winery, with bottling facilities and underground cellar storage, as well as an award winning restaurant and cellar door facilities. However, their vineyards are in Hawke’s Bay where they have significant holdings in the Gimblett Gravels, the fruit from there supplemented by grapes from other districts in Hawke’s Bay and other regions. The wine tiers are distinct in their styles, the ‘Estate’ wines made in an accessible style for everyday enjoyment, whilst offering value. The ‘Reserve’ wines, made from low yielding vines have greater fruit intensity and are more interesting and complete wines. The ‘flagship’ ‘Elspeth’ wines are limited in quantity and made when excellence can be captured. The general quality of the Mills Reef wines is such that the separation between the tiers can be blurred with wines often appearing to be able to earn a place in a higher tier. Here, I review the ‘Reserve’ Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2015 from the Gimblett Gravels. www.millsreef.co.nz
