Mills Reef ‘Reserve’ Gimblett Gravels Syrah 2013

It is exciting times as the 2013 vintage wines from Hawke’s Bay are being released onto the market. There has been much said about the ideal growing conditions, and the claims of 2013 as one of the great years are being substantiated. From my tastings so far, the white wines are certainly superior to the previous years, but I don’t think they are as strikingly better as it is with the red wines. The red wines across all varieties seemed to have come through exceptionally well. The Bordeaux varieties have benefitted enormously, and maybe Merlot will be the star. Syrah can be an interesting variety in drought conditions, often rising above the Bordeaux varieties in cooler years, but in 2013, as in 2009, the results appear outstanding.

In May, earlier this year, I had a preview of Mills Reef’s ‘Reserve’ Syrah 2013 from the Gimblett Gravels as a barrel sample before it had been finished. Winemakers Tim Preston and Paul Dawick, and general manager Nick Aleksich were very pleased with it, and I could sense the potential with its ripeness and layers of interest. Based on this, the upper echelon ‘Elspeth’ wines could be spectacular! They have now sent the finished ‘Reserve’ wine to me for assessment. Here is my review. www.millsreeef.co.nz
