Mills Reef Reserve Gimblett Gravels Merlot 2012

There has been much said about the challenging 2012 growing season and vintage in Hawke’s Bay. The very cool weather meant it was difficult to achieve ripeness despite reduced yields, and there were a number of rain events. Such a vintage shows the quality of the vineyard sites, the mettle of the growers and the experience of the winemakers, and even in such difficult years, creditable wines can be produced. An essential role of the winemaker is to handle the fruit sensitively, so as not to impose a pre-determined style, but let the wine come into its natural balance. In 2012, Hawke’s Bay, that balance appears in main, to be for lighter, more accessible wines. Here, I review the 2012 ‘Reserve’ Merlot which shows that balance.
