Mills Reef ‘Estate’ Syrah 2014 and ‘Elspeth’ Cabernet/Merlot 2013

The Mills Reef wine ranges are quite distinct in separation for commercial purposes. The ‘Estate’ wines made in a soft, rounder style for early approachability and everyday enjoyment, and offer value. The ‘Reserve’ wines ae made from low-yielding vines producing wines with more intense flavours and varietal definition balanced with texture and structure. The top tier ‘Elspeth’ wines come from the company’s own Gimblett Gravels vineyards only when the fruit is exceptional in quality, and they are made in a hands-on, no-expense spared approach. Yet all three tiers reflect the vintage, and in 2014 as well as 2013, Mills Reef experienced superior growing seasons. Here, I review the 2014 ‘Estate’ Syrah and 2013 ‘Elspeth’ Cabernet/Merlot.
