The Preston family of Mills Reef have a strong and long-serving team which is thoroughly versed in producing some of the best wines from Hawke’s Bay. Tim Preston has Paul Dawick as his right hand man in sharing the responsibilities in winemaking matters, and Nick Aleksich as general manager tending all business affairs. Along with the winemaking and viticultural people, the Mills Reef team is tight and cohesive, always thinking about how they can better their wines in qualitative terms as well as for providing greater drinking pleasure for the consumer. In discussion with Nick Aleksich, Mills Reef is aware that these two aims are not mutually exclusive, and that is why their wines often over-deliver above their station. It’s a good position to be able to do so, and regularly, as is the case with Mills Reef. Here, I review the new 2014 ‘Elspeth’ Chardonnay and 2013 ‘Reserve’ Cabernet/Merlot. www.millsreef.co.nz
