Mills Reef 2013 Pinot Gris and 2012 Merlot Cabernet and Reserve Pinot Noir

There are always balances and levellers when it comes to vintages and how they affect any given current range offering of any decently sized wine producer. New releases from Mills Reef show this well, with a 2013 Pinot Gris from Hawke’s Bay, deemed an outstanding vintage, whereas the 2012 Merlot/Cabernet is from a difficult year there. But then again, 2012 was a top-rated year in Marlborough for Pinot Noir, the yields being tiny. The Mills Reef ‘Reserve’ tier wine is from there. One makes up for the other! The over-riding factor is quite possibly the standard maintained by the winery, and that at Mills Reef is high. Here are my reviews of this diverse selection.
