Mills Reef 2013 ‘Elspeth’ Syrah and ‘Trust’ Cabernet Sauvignon

We are seeing a golden period for Hawke’s Bay wine with the three outstanding vintages, 2013, 2014 and 2015 successfully harvested. The 2013 vintage wines released to date have confirmed the quality of the fruit, and the initial releases of 2014 wine have done the same. We are now seeing the ‘heavyweights’ of 2013 appear on the market now, these being the richer and more complex wines which have benefited from greater barrel-maturation and time in bottle. Among the wines to anticipate are the Mills Reef ‘Elspeth’ tier, the super-premier range for the Preston family, these being produced from the best hand-picked lots from the company’s Gimblett Gravels, Hawke’s Bay vineyards, and made with a "no expense spare approach”. The ‘Elspeth’ wines are named in honour of the winemaker’s grandmother. Here’ I review the 2013 ‘Elspeth’ Syrah and ‘Elspeth’ ‘Trust Vineyard’ Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines show beautifully tight and elegantly concentrated structures and greater oak sensitivity than ever before.
