Mills Reef 2012 Reserve Chardonnay and Merlot/Malbec

16-Sep-2013
The favoured varieties in Hawke’s Bay have traditionally been Chardonnay and those for Bordeaux-styled wines, recently joined by Syrah. They are favoured as they consistently produced good wine in lesser seasons as well as the better years. Mills Reef has always been strong in these varieties, and across the different tiers has made classical wines. The ‘Reserve’ wines are at the premium level and winemakers Tim Preston and Paul Dawick strive to achieve "balance of flavour, structure and texture”. The popularity among consumers and results on the wine judging circuit show they do so. Here I review the new release 2012 ‘Reserve’ Chardonnay and Merlot/Malbec blend, from a cooler, lighter vintage. The volume of flavour built in is very positive. www.millsreef.co.nz
