Maui and Tiki Estate are brands of Royce and Sue McKean who operate Tiki Wine and Vineyards from Christchurch not far from Waipara where they established the 320 ha ‘Waiata’ vineyard over 2004 – 2006 after returning to New Zealand from overseas. They then developed a further 225 ha of vineyards in the Upper Wairau Valley in Marlborough over 2007 – 2008. The McKeans became major contract growers with their fruit but with the launch of their own label with 2009 vintage fruit, they quickly expanded their production to make a strong impact on the market. A New Zealand Maori wine producer, Tiki Wines and Vineyards is a member of ‘Tuku’ the recently formed Maori winemakers collective which operates on shared values of the land, family and hospitality. The members comprise Steve Bird Wines, Kuru Kuru, Oster, te Pa and Tiki. www.tuku.nz Here I review the new 2018 Maui Waipara and Tiki ‘Estate’ Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs. www.tikiwine.com
