Matariki Returning to the Stars

16-Jul-2014
True to name, Matariki wine is undergoing new beginnings, being revitalised following a difficult period of receivership. John O’Connor has released a selection of Hawke’ Bay wines under his new company the Taurus Wine Group which has purchased the ‘Matariki’ and ‘Quintology’ brands. The name ‘Taurus’ reflects the ‘fighting spirit of the bull’ as demonstrated by John’s desire to rebuild his winegrowing business, and it has an astronomical and celestial relevance in that the Matariki cluster of stars is part of the Taurus constellation. The wines released are those made from the Matariki Gimblett Road vineyard but under new labelling and tiers. The ‘top-of-the-line’ wine is ‘Taurus – A Celebration’ a 2007 limited production wine originally made to celebrate 30 years from founding in 1977. The ‘Quintology’ remains the icon wine, with ‘Les Filles’ (the daughters) as a new label Beneath these is the ‘Reserve’ and ‘No’Ble’ ranges. These wines are those retained or purchased back by John in the formation of his new company, and at the top level, they are the best from the outstanding 2009 vintage in Hawke’s Bay, showing the benefits of bottle age. For future bottlings, the intention is to source fruit from selected vineyards and oversee winemaking at a custom crush facility. In the process of regrouping, John has skipped making wine only from one vintage, that being 2012. www.matarikiwines.co.nz
