Matahiwi ‘Holly’ Wairarapa Sauvignon Blanc 2013

01-Oct-2014
The 2014 vintage saw Matahiwi Estate, the Wairarapa’s largest winegrowing venture outside Martinborough, start its second decade of wine production. Owner Alastair Scott and winemaker Jane Cooper have quietly grown and consolidated the extensive portfolio from the modern winery on Paierau Road, Masterton and their 75 ha of vineyards, supplemented with fruit from local growers and from Hawke’s Bay. Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir has always been the focus, with Pinot Gris added to the plantings later. Included in the range of wines made is Chardonnay and Merlot, and most recently an excellent limited release Late Harvest botrytised wine in 2013 (click here to see my review). The Matahiwi ‘Estate’ tier is supported by a successful secondary label ‘Mt Hector’ and limited release reserve-styled wines under the ‘Holly’ label, named after Alastair’s daughter. Matahiwi recently underwent a makeover and the wines are under new labelling and are presented on a new website. Here, I review the new ‘Holly’ Sauvignon Blanc 2013. www.matahiwi.co.nz
