Margrain 2016 Whites and Rosé, and 2014 Pinot Gris and River’s Edge Pinot Noir

Part of the second wave of Martinborough winegrowers, Graham and Daryl Margrain established their 4 ha vineyard venture in 1992. The business has grown to offer visitors to the region a complete experience with conference and accommodation facilities, cellar door and café. The vineyards have also grown, the Margrains acquiring the neighbouring Chifney vineyard with mature vines and the planting of a block on Dry River Road, south of the village, in 2001. Strat Canning is the very experienced and highly respected winemaker who adds his style to the eclectic range of wines. His tasting notes are particularly fun to read and are indicative of his clever approach. Here, I review a selection of 2016 whites and a rosé, and the 2014 Pinot Gris, a wine that Margrain makes dry, needing bottle age, plus the second tier ‘River’s Edge’ Pinot Noir, also from 2014.
