Margrain 2013 and 2011 Martinborough Releases

Graham and Daryl Margrain are among the second wave of Martinborough winegrowers, establishing their 4 ha vineyard in 1992. Since then, Margrain Vineyard has expanded, acquiring the neighbouring Chifney vineyards that gave them access to 20 y.o. vines, and planting a block on Dry River Road, 5 km south of the village in 2001. The Margrain’s philosophy is to make wines that they are proud to put their name on, and Strat Canning, winemaker and viticulturist, who has been there since 1996, the second vintage, shares the level of aspiration, making stylishly elegant, food-friendly, textural wines of class. They are not afraid of given the wines an appropriate period of bottle age before putting them on the market if required. Here I review a selection of new releases from the 2013 and 2011 vintages.
