Maori Point 2014 Pinot Gris and Riesling, and 2012-2014 Pinot Noir

11-Dec-2015
John Harris and Marilyn Duxson established Maori Point Vineyard in 2002 after a background of academia. The 6.5 ha of Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir is planted on a site on a bend of the Clutha River near Tarras where Maori prospectors panned for gold in the 1860s. The first wines were made in 2006, with John taking on full winemaking from the 2013 vintage. His focus is on naturally made wines and minimal intervention. John and Marilyn have recently been joined by Matt and Maggie Evans, who have taken half shares of Maori Point Wines, while Maori Point Vineyards remains with John and Marilyn. Matt also makes wine at Elke Wines in the Anderson Valley, California. Matt and Maggie share the ideals for the wines to express place and growing season. It appears Maori Point is entering an interesting stage of development. Here, I review the 2014 Pinot Gris and Riesling, and Pinot Noirs from 2012 to 2014. www.maoripoint.co.nz
