Man O’ War Extreme Waiheke Island Whites

10-Sep-2014
Man O’ War is an archetype Waiheke Island wine producer established to specialise in classical Bordeaux-varietal reds. The Spencer family have given considerable rein to the viticultural and winemaking interpretations of Mark Allen and Duncan McTavish respectively to expand the scope of the portfolio, and we have seen superb releases of Chardonnay, Viognier, Pinot Gris and Syrah over recent vintages. Here, I review a selection of white wine styles, all in the flagship ‘black label’ range, the interpretation of which can be considered carried to extremes. They are the inaugural ‘Pinque’ Rosé 2014, which is of course a white wine in behaviour with red wine colour, a new ‘Tulia’ Blanc de Blanc Methode Traditionnelle 2012, a fully complex ‘Valhalla’ Chardonnay 2013 and first release of a botrytised ‘Holystone’ Noble Sauvignon/Semillon 2012. It couldn’t be a more extreme collection of whites! www.manowarvineyards.co.nz
