Maison Noire – Micro-Boutique Hawke’s Bay Wines

14-Feb-2017
Maison Noire is the wine venture of Frenchman Guillaume Thomas and his wife Esther. Guillaume, born in the Loire, studied winemaking and viticulture in Bordeaux, and then followed a course of wine work in Australia and California, as well as Hungary, in addition to France. He arrived in New Zealand in February 2006, and since then has worked at Hatton Estate, Church Road and then 7 years at Alpha Domus. He is now at the Hawke’s Bay Wine Company. During that time, Guillaume has come to love the Hawke’s Bay styles of wines, such that he and Esther purchased a plot of land on Waimarama Road, and built their accommodation on it, then over 2014 and 2015, they planted 0.8 ha to Syrah and Cabernet Franc, with Cabernet Sauvignon and then Chenin Blanc. While waiting for their vines to bear, they have sourced fruit for their ‘Maison Noire’ label, named after their black-coloured house, from contract growers. The production of the wines will not exceed 150 cases for each batch, and will incorporate their own fruit as well as grapes from growers with whom they have built a relationship with. Here, I review the 2015 Sauvignon Blanc and 2016 Albarino and Chardonnay in whites, the 2015 Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2014 Cabernet Franc.
