Lowburn Ferry ‘Home Block’ Pinot Noir 2012

21-Oct-2013
The Lowburn Ferry label of Jean and Roger Gibson has experienced success from the very first vintage in 2009. The 4 ha site on terraces below the Pisa Ranges at Lowburn in Central Otago seems to be a particularly favoured one for Pinot Noir with their ‘Skeleton Creek’, ‘Home Block’ and ‘The Ferryman’ reserve wines consistently winning gold medals and earning 5-star ratings. The former label incorporates fruit from sites in the wider Cromwell Basin area, and ‘The Ferryman’ reserve wine is made only in exceptional years, while I see the ‘Home Block’ as their premium wine that showcases the site in its more pure form. The wines are made by Peter Bartle at VinPro. I tasted the 2012 ‘Home Block’ Pinot Noir ‘blind’ at the ‘Spring Release’ Central Otago Pinot Noir tasting in July (click here to see my report) and noted its complex flavours and sinewy textures. Here, I review the wine in a more critical situation. www.lowburnferry.co.nz
