Kingsmill ‘Tippet’s Dam’ Central Otago Pinot Noir 2011

21-Aug-2014
The ‘Tippet’s Dam’ vineyard sited next to the Stewart Town ruins above the historic Bannockburn sluicings has proven to be a first-class site for premium Pinot Noir. Phillip Horn and Donna Abrams established the vineyard in 2000 with the guidance of viticulturist Karen Olssen, planting 12,000 vines, 60% to Dijon clones and 40% to older clones for diversity. The soils are a mix of Ardgaur, Hawksburn and Felton, mainly light brown sandy loam over alluvial schist gravels, as well as clay loams over gravel. The wine is made by Malcolm Rees-Francis of Rockburn. I rated the 2009 release very highly (click here to see my review). Here, I review the 2011 release. www.kingsmillwines.co.nz
