Kina Cliffs 2016 Sauvignon, 2015 Pinot Gris and 2012 Pinot Noirs

Julie and Ailstair Ashcroft established Kina Cliffs in 2000 when they purchased their 4.5 ha coastal block at Kina, near Nelson, to return to a rural lifestyle. With two vineyards neighbouring, they planted Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir vines in 2004, adding Pinot Gris in 2009, then opening a cellar door on site in 2012. There are 3.3 ha o vines planted on Moutere clay-gravel soils, and the vines are tended personally by Julie and Alistair. The Ashcrofts have their wines made by Patrick Stowe of Rimu Grove, except for the Sauvignon Blanc, which is made by Neil Todd at Kahurangi Estate. Here, I review the new release 2016 Sauvignon Blanc, 2015 Pinot Gris, and 2012 ‘estate’ and ‘Reserve’ Pinot Noirs, the reds from a low yield vintage which the Ashcrofts see as needing some bottle age to show their potential.
