Kina Beach Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir Releases

Purchasing the Kina Beach Vineyard in December 2011, Karin Schoch and Achim Bauer have revitalised the winegrowing operation and boutique vineyard accommodation, but in essence not changed the essentials which have had a track record in producing excellent wine. Hailing from Switzerland, Karin and Achim familiarised themselves with the New Zealand wine scene, Karin by completing studies at EIT while working at Trinity Hill, and Achim at Clearview, while scouting the country for a lifestyle vineyard. Their search led them to Kina Beach Vineyard near Nelson. They recognised the basis of the quality being the 4.2 ha Moutere clay-gravel soil vineyard planted by Dave and Pam Birt in 1998 and the established contracted winemakers who were engaged to craft the wines. The vineyard has 1.1 ha of Sauvignon Blanc, 1.8 ha of Mendoza and clone 15 Chardonnay and 1.3 ha of mixed clone Pinot Noir which is made into wine under the Kina Beach label, with a portion of the grapes sold to other producers. Here, I review the current and new release wines, a 2012 Sauvignon Blanc, a 2011 ‘Reserve’ Chardonnay and 2010 ‘Reserve’ Pinot Noir.
